Marcel Breuer

*1902 in Pes, Ungarn  + 1981 in New York, USA
Architect and designer, born in Pécs,
S Hungary
. A student at the Bauhaus in
Germany
from 1920, he took charge of the furniture workshop by 1924, and
designed probably the first modern tubular steel chair. In 1937 he joined Walter
Gropius in the
USA
as associate professor of architecture at Harvard (1937-46)
and in architectural practice. Working independently after 1947, he designed
the majority of his architectural projects, including the UNESCO building in
Paris
(with Bernard Zehrfuss and Pier Luigi Nervi). A significant figure in the
xModern Movementx, his classic furniture designs, in particular, represented
major developments in materials and techniques.
Marcel Breuer died in New
York on 2nd June 1981.
